The New South Wales beef cattle assessment
course was again hosted at Tocal agricultural
collage in July. Over 40 participants came
from a diverse range of industry backgrounds
to combine some interesting knowledge and
perspectives. It was positive to see many
of these individuals as inspiring young beef
industry enthusiast, who had received scholarships
to attend.
The four days combined information sessions
on cattle assessment and marketing to compliment
the extensive hands on aspect of the event.
We were fortunate enough to have numerous
pens of cattle supplied by local producers
to critically assess, which the participants
were grateful for. Breeding stock both stud
and commercial, store steers and prime cattle
were all assessed under the different marketing
scenarios. The experience from the over judges
and other associates involved, ensured there
was plenty of debates and interaction.
A highlight of the event was the carcase assessment
that was held at Hamilton TAFE. This final
session wrapped up the event, and helped to
really enforce the aspects covered over the
past few days. On the competitive side, Michael
Whale of Walcha was overall champion, with
myself coming runner up.
New England Angus Breeders once again did
a terrific job organising the event, and the
knowledge imparted by the over judges Chris
Knox and Rodger Evans was again invaluable.
