VICTORIAN AG SCIENCE STUDENT TO TOUR BRAZIL
An agricultural science student raised on a beef property
near Ballarat has been selected to travel to Brazil through the inaugural
Angus Youth COALAR Australia Brazil Exchange.
Andrew Carey, 19, of Gordon in Victoria, was chosen from a strong field
of applicants vying for the two-month exchange, which will involve living
and working with two Brazilian farming families.
He will also inspect some of the country’s beef supply chain systems.
Angus Australia has teamed up with the Council of Australian Latin American
Relations (COALAR) to provide Andrew with a return ticket to Brazil
and all internal travel to the host sites.
Andrew applied for the scholarship to learn more about the international
beef industry.
“Although Brazil is not currently competing directly with Australia
in the Asian markets, it’s important not to be complacent about
their traceability and food safety standards, as these will improve
in the future” Andrew said.
Angus Youth coordinator Jim Klarner said Andrew had already obtained
impressive beef industry experience through involvement at the Royal
Melbourne Show and Southern Beef School, by conducting artificial insemination
and embryo transfer work on his own Angus stud and through a two-month
MLA internship to China.
“Angus Youth is proud to have the support of COALAR to provide
emerging leaders like Andrew with an exciting opportunity to experience
the Brazilian beef industry,” Mr Klarner said.
“The partnership between Angus Youth and COALAR is also enabling
a young Brazilian to travel to Australia and experience our beef industry.”
Mr Klarner is currently seeking expressions of interest from Angus members
to host the young Brazilian.
The Brazilian would live and take an active involvement in a member’s
cattle operation for one month early next year.
