Black Out at Shorthorn Youth Show
By Jasmine Nixon

Among an impressive line-up of over 100 competitors at this year's National Shorthorn Youth Expo was a contingent of Angus Youth members who swapped the black for the red, white and roan over the long weekend in Tamworth.

Intermediate competitor and Angus Youth member from Nevertire, Diana George showed her skills in the judging arena, winning the Intermediate Champion Junior Judge. She was also the recipient of the Tocal Judging School Scholarship, giving her the opportunity to attend the renowned NSW judging school next year.

AY member Kierin Martin from Narromine will be heading to Adelaide next July as the successful applicant for the SA Junior Heifer Expo Scholarship. Luck of the draw went to Stuart Hobbs of Kurrajong Angus, Molong with his number being drawn as the recipient of the major encouragement award, a registered stud Shorthorn heifer donated by major sponsors Dunbeacon Shorthorns.

AY was strongly represented in the placings for Paraders with Trangie boys Bradley Cronin and Luke Cronin, and Rachael Wheeler from Peak Hill taking out first place in their respective classes. Luke Cronin also went on to convincingly win the Intermediate Championship. Another eight AY members placed in their handler classes, a significant achievement considering the size of the classes and calibre of handlers on show. Special mention must also go to Chad Williamson of Guyra and Sam Martin of North Turramurra for their “three ugly sisters” act in the calf capers.

Congratulations to this year's associate judge, 2008 Landmark Ambassador Glenn Bulloch of Burrell Creek who was a magnificent representative for Angus Youth. Glenn's professionalism in the judging arena was considered very impressive by many spectators and competitors. Angus Youth is pleased to welcome the 2008 Grand Champion Junior Judge of the Shorthorn Heifer Expo, Greg Schuller as the associate judge for 2009 Roundup in Canberra .

Congratulations to all Angus Youth members for your achievements throughout the show. It's great to see you all out enjoying being a part of the beef industry. Well done to the Shorthorn Youth Club for running such a successful show, and all the best for next year.
