South Australian Angus Youth is still currently in a rebuilding faze,
so there’s not a lot to report to date. Currently myself, Jason
Schulz, and Heath Nickolls are planning an introductory dinner for existing
Angus youth members and people interested in joining Angus Youth to attend.
The proposed venue will probably be in the town of Keith being the central
point to those members in the Murraylands, and the Lower South East.
The dinner will be informal, but the objective is to discuss what the
youth members want to achieve and get out of being in Angus Youth, as
well as planning future events, and letting the members know what Angus
Youth has to offer. We may get a guest speaker, so we are now looking
for suggestions on who could give an inspirational talk on how they’re
involved, or got involved in the beef industry.
This is an exciting time, and we hope to get the Youth group going to
what it previously was.
Recently I attended the National Angus Youth Leadership clinic held in
Armidale, February 14th-16th, where the AY Management committee members,
each representing their own state got to meet in person, and discussed
future events for AY, and delegated positions for the 2006 AY Management
committee.
It was a great experience, and I enjoyed the interaction with other youth
members that are so passionate about Angus cattle, and the beef industry.
As you are well aware, at the start of March the Wodonga National Angus
Cattle Expo., and Sale was on, as well as the National Judging Competition.
Both myself, and Damien Slade attended, and competed in the judging competition
representing South Australia. The competition consisted of an interview
process, beef quiz, and 2 days of live animal, and carcass judging, as
well as public speaking. I am happy to report that I won the competition,
and a scholarship to the United States to study at the University of Illinois,
which I’ll be under taking as of January 2007. The runner up in
the competition was Penny McArdle, who wasrepresenting Victoria. Penny
has now moved to South Australia for work, and we are happy to have her
here,
as she has been involved in the Victorian Angus Youth, and is currently
the secretary
on the AY Management committee, and she’ll bring along, her enthusiasm
to South Australia’s Angus Youth group.
2004
The 2004 Royal Adelaide Show was on the 3rd to the 11th of September,
with all of the usual thrills and spills, for all who venture through
the mighty gates to experience.
Bill Cornell was the judge for Angus
this year, and was very well received. A big congratulations to Kim Richards
(who is part of the Performance Breeders Group and a past Angus Youth
Ambassador), with her bull “Angus Park Joint Venture Y132I ET”
being awarded the Junior Champion Angus Bull. Other current and past Angus
Youth members to be congratulated include Hayden Rogers, John Gommers
and Heath Nickolls. Ashlee Oldfield also did extremely well receiving
third prize in the Senior Handlers Competition against so very experienced
opponents.
