Claire Coffey, WA Chairperson
Our aim this year is to bring young people with a similar interest (that of course being cattle!) together. The best way to learn, to advance in self development and to make contacts and friends is though your peers. In Western Australia, we are not short of young people with a
passion for cattle, but we are short of opportunities where they can get together and discuss the industry, the latest scientific advancement or their latest run in with an angry and very scary bull.

Accordingly, we are currently in the early stages of organizing an Angus Youth Beef Camp, aimed at exposing and educating attendees on many aspects of the beef industry through both farm visits and lectures.

In addition, the Cattle Assessment School and Youth Cattle Handlers School are both to be
held again this year. Positions are limited so if you intend to go (and you definitely should!) then get your form in quick.

2005
As Angus Youth membership numbers in WA are currently small, the emphasis this year will be on finding young WA cattle enthusiasts and letting them in on the opportunities that exist when joining Angus Youth (AY). No previous affinity with Angus cattle is required, with the only prerequisite being that you must be under 30 years of age. The opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience is vast, with much fun to be had along the way!

A cattle assessment school is being held on July 12-14th 2005 at Harvey Agricultural College. This represents an opportunity for people of all ages and experience levels to come together in what is always a very educational and enjoyable experience.

Another opportunity for WA beef enthusiasts to further enhance their knowledge exists at the newly formed WA Youth Cattle Handlers School. This is to be held at the Brunswick Showgrounds on April 13-15th of 2005. During the school participants will be educated on various aspects of the cattle industry including skills in and out of the show ring, safety, cattle health and nutrition, as well as public speaking through junior judging. This Cattle School fills a void that previously existed in the WA Cattle Industry, and enables the opportunities that exist over-east to become available to WA Cattle-lovers. The school is open to anyone under the age of 25 with an interest in any breed.

Every year AY organises a hugely successful roundup, whereby anywhere up to 120 young cattle enthusiasts embark on 3 days of cattle education. On completion, participants leave with a wealth of knowledge on many aspects of the beef industry, as well as many new contacts Australia wide. WA AY would love to send over representatives to show the rest of Australia the somewhat hidden talent that exists here in WA.
